Noise as energy a good call

Tuesday, 7 June 2011 | By Michelle Hammond
voice-charged mobileKorean researchers have discovered a way to charge mobile phones using people’s voices as they chat, opening up a new window of opportunity for entrepreneurs interested in energy efficiency.

Developer Dr Sang-Woo Kim, based in Seoul, says everyday sounds have been overlooked as a source of energy.

His team has a prototype that converts sound that is the equivalent of noisy traffic into 50 million volts of electricity. Although it is not enough to charge a phone fully, the team is hoping to perfect the technology.

For those looking to make their mark in the energy sector, this kind of technology could prove to be the ideal way to stand out.

Imagine how useful this kind of energy would be for users in remote locations, such as soldiers, farmers and tourists. Why not delve a bit deeper into the concept of noise as energy and see where it leads you?
