THE NEWS WRAP: Twitter targets live events with Project Lightning – StartupSmart

Twitter is looking to become a bigger player in live events through a major new feature called Project Lightning.

Detailing the secretive Project Lightning to Buzzfeed two days before his resignation, former Twitter CEO Dick Costolo says the feature will bring event-based curated content to the platform, along with instant-load photos and videos and the ability to embed those across the web.

The hope is this increased focus on live events will help Twitter attract more users. With 302 million monthly active users, it’s roughly one fifth the size of Facebook.

Apple Watch 2?

The next version of the Apple Watch will likely include a video camera, a new wireless system and new premium priced models, 9to5mac reports.

Shortly after the Apple Watch launched there were reports that Apple was considering the 2016 release of a second-generation model.

The inclusion of a video camera would enable Apple Watch users to make and receive FaceTime calls on their wrists. The wireless system is aimed to give the device more independence from an iPhone. Apple is also considering ways to attract customers willing to pay between $1000 and $10,000 for the new device.

Nokia phones may rise again

Nokia, once the world’s largest mobile phone maker, plans to start designing and licensing smartphones once an agreement with Microsoft allows it to in 2016, Reuters reports.

Nokia sold its phone business to Microsoft in 2014 after years of declining sales. Nokia’s chief executive told Germany’s Manager Magazin that the company is looking for suitable mobile partners.

“Microsoft makes mobile phones. We would simply design them and then make the brand name available to license,” he says.
