The News Wrap: New search deal with Google could give Twitter revenue a boost
Twitter has struck a deal with Google to make its updates easier to find online, Bloomberg reports.
In the first half of this year Tweets will be visible in Google search results as soon as they’ve posted. Google had previously needed to crawl Twitter’s site for the information, but now thanks to the new deal Google will have access to the stream of data generated by Twitter’s 284 million users.
The result of course is more Tweets are seen by non-users, enabling Twitter to generate more advertising revenue from a larger audience.
Twitter CEO Dick Costolo: “We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls”
In other Twitter news, the social media giant’s CEO, Dick Costolo, has taken personal responsibility for the platform’s failure to deal with harassment and abuse.
“We suck at dealing with abuse and trolls on the platform and we’ve sucked for years,” Costolo says in an internal memo obtained by The Verge.
Costolo vowed to do more to combat the problem, which he says is costing Twitter “core user after core suer”.
Apple thinking about its own Web TV service?
TV industry executives say Apple is in talks with TV programmers about deals that would allow Apple to offer an “over the top” pay-TV service, Re/code reports.
Apple would bundle programming together and sell it directly to consumers over the web.
The Dow Jones Industrial average is up 211.86 to 17,884.88. The Australian dollar is currently trading at US78 cents.
