Sony Vinoculars, Video Binoculars: Start-up Idea

Vinoculars not a short-sighted idea

Sony VinocularsSony has invented binoculars that allow users to pause, rewind and play back whatever they are viewing, which could prove to be a huge hit at spectator sports and music events.

The Vinoculars, or video binoculars, could revolutionise concerts, horse racing, cricket and even bird-watching.

They will let sport spectators enjoy action replays at live events, while music fans can record and watch concerts in 3D while recording the sound in stereo.

They will also allow a birdwatcher to record a sighting of a rare species and then send proof to other twitchers within minutes. A GPS receiver also notes the position of the sighting.

Paul Genge, Sony’s technical field sales manager, believes the product will transform the market.

“The binocular market is a very traditional market. To date, innovations have been about things like improving the coating. They are all manual focus. These are very different,” Genge says.

Genge says that although the devices are aimed at anyone who is passionate about conservation and sport, they could also be used in security and policing.

Does this suggest there are opportunities for other entrepreneurs to innovate in the binocular market?
