The surge in start-up accelerators, incubators and wannabe global superstars in the past few years has a very urban feel to it.

But what of those living “off the grid” in Australia’s rural and regional areas? Despite patchy support and technology, remote innovation is making its mark.

Today, we speak to some rural start-ups that, as one of them argues, tend to devise ideas in response to problems rather than the vice versa of many urban garage-dwellers.

Start-up funding is a major problem for SMEs both city and country-based – today we have news on how a UK move to introduce a small business bank has got the cold shoulder Down Under.
