{"id":31999,"date":"2023-10-20T14:26:38","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T14:26:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/startupsmart.test\/2023\/10\/20\/facebook-also-wants-to-be-news-to-you-startupsmart\/"},"modified":"2023-10-20T14:26:38","modified_gmt":"2023-10-20T14:26:38","slug":"facebook-also-wants-to-be-news-to-you-startupsmart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/uncategorized\/facebook-also-wants-to-be-news-to-you-startupsmart\/","title":{"rendered":"Facebook also wants to be news to you &#8211; StartupSmart"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"443\" height=\"352\" itemprop=\"image\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/l_facebooknewsfeed_445.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"l_facebooknewsfeed_445\"\/><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It seems everyone wants a piece of the smartphone news market.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"growth\/apple-news-launches-in-australia\/2015102315782.html\">Apple<\/a> launched its news function last month, <a href=\"growth\/snapchat-scraps-plans-to-produce-original-content\/2015101415715.html\">Snapchat<\/a> has brought organisations like CNN onto its platform, and Twitter is still considered top dog of the smartphone news sphere, with its <a href=\"growth\/growth-strategy\/twitter-moves-to-make-money-off-people-without-accounts\/2015110215840.html\">Moments feature<\/a> is looking to firm up the app\u2019s number one position.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But the market has become even more crowded today with the release of Facebook\u2019s Notify app, which sends notifications to users from a choice of over 70 partners such as Comedy Central and <i>Harper\u2019s Bazaar<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These partners choose what they send out and when, with the notification linking directly to their own webpage.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But if Facebook can\u2019t control the content, and if the notifications don\u2019t link to their site, what\u2019s the benefit for the social media giant?<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s product director Michael Cerda says mobile notifications are their own distinct medium, one in which Facebook is keen to assert its presence.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople have different ways they want to consume information,\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/recode.net\/2015\/11\/11\/facebooks-new-app-notify-pushes-content-to-your-lock-screen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cerda tells <i>Re\/code<\/i><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSearch is one way. Social is another way. And we think push notifications might be yet another. We see that as an evolving medium and want to be a part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But <i>Re\/code\u2019s<\/i> Kurt Wagner wonders whether people actually want more content on their lock screen. He says push notifications are already overwhelming and many people receive them from publishers they care about.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you love push notifications from the <i>New York Times<\/i> for example, you\u2019ve probably taken the time to download the <i>NYT<\/i> app,\u201d he writes.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><i>Do you know more on this story or have a tip of your own?
