{"id":32053,"date":"2023-10-20T14:26:52","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T14:26:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/startupsmart.test\/2023\/10\/20\/grim-picture-snapchat-is-losing-a-lot-of-money-leaked-documents-show-startupsmart\/"},"modified":"2023-10-20T14:26:52","modified_gmt":"2023-10-20T14:26:52","slug":"grim-picture-snapchat-is-losing-a-lot-of-money-leaked-documents-show-startupsmart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/uncategorized\/grim-picture-snapchat-is-losing-a-lot-of-money-leaked-documents-show-startupsmart\/","title":{"rendered":"Grim picture: Snapchat is losing a lot of money, leaked documents show &#8211; StartupSmart"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"445\" height=\"352\" itemprop=\"image\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/04\/l_mobile-cafe-2-445.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"l_mobile-cafe-2-445\"\/><\/div>\n<p>Leaked documents show picture messaging app Snapchat is still trying to figure out how to monetise its 100 million mostly young users. <\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The figures, <a href=\"http:\/\/gawker.com\/snapchat-lost-a-ton-of-money-last-year-1706957414\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">obtained by <i>Gawker<\/i><\/a>, show the startup lost $US128 million during the first 11 months of 2014, and only brought in $3 million revenue.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Snapchat is valued at $15 billion based mainly on its huge user base, but it\u2019s still yet to define a clear roadmap to profitability.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not all that surprising for a network-effect driven startup to be losing large chunks of money, and it usually takes a while for these types of companies to turn those massive user-bases into profits.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Snapchat is nearly four years old now, and CEO Evan Spiegel has already rejected a $3 billion buyout from Facebook.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company introduced advertising to its platform in October last year, charging a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.adweek.com\/news\/technology\/snapchat-asks-brands-750000-advertise-and-wont-budge-162359\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported $750,000 per day<\/a>, so this could bump up the figures for this year too.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not all bad news for Snapchat though, with the leaked documents showing it still has nearly $380 million in the bank.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><i>Raising your <\/i><a href=\"startupschool\/events\/hacking-your-first-investment-round\/\"><i>first round of capital<\/i><\/a><i>?
