{"id":38581,"date":"2023-10-20T14:57:29","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T14:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/startupsmart.test\/2023\/10\/20\/tech-giants-combine-to-fund-responsible-open-ai-research-startupsmart\/"},"modified":"2023-10-20T14:57:29","modified_gmt":"2023-10-20T14:57:29","slug":"tech-giants-combine-to-fund-responsible-open-ai-research-startupsmart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/uncategorized\/tech-giants-combine-to-fund-responsible-open-ai-research-startupsmart\/","title":{"rendered":"Tech giants combine to fund responsible open AI research &#8211; StartupSmart"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"445\" height=\"352\" itemprop=\"image\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/l_ai-445.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"l_ai-445\"\/><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Some of the tech scene\u2019s biggest names have joined forces \u2013 and wallets \u2013 in a bid to unlock the secrets of artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With $US1 billion in funding from business figureheads like Tesla\u2019s Elon Musk, and headed by former Stripe chief technical officer Greg Brockman, OpenAI wants to advance artificial intelligence research in a way that will \u201cbenefit humanity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s hard to fathom how much human-level AI could benefit society, and it&#8217;s equally hard to imagine how much it could damage society if built or used incorrectly,\u201d Brockman says via <a href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/blog\/introducing-openai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a post on the company\u2019s blog<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2015\/12\/12\/science\/artificial-intelligence-research-center-is-founded-by-silicon-valley-investors.html?_r=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Musk told <i>The New York Times<\/i><\/a> the company\u2019s goal is to create an \u201cartificial general intelligence\u201d, a machine capable of performing any intellectual task that a human being can.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But he also has long-standing concerns AI could turn against humans, and says OpenAI is an effort to guide the technology responsibly into the future.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The not-for-profit says it will be free to focus on creating this positive impact because it won\u2019t have to generate a financial return.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It will also be making its research public.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearchers will be strongly encouraged to publish their work, whether as papers, blog posts, or code, and our patents (if any) will be shared with the world,\u201d the blog says.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ll freely collaborate with others across many institutions and expect to work with companies to research and deploy new technologies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI is the second billion-dollar investment in artificial intelligence this year after Toyota announced it would establish a laboratory dedicated to AI research.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><i>Do you know more on this story or have a tip of your own?
