There’s been a growing trend for large tech companies to release diversity figures and, invariably, an accompanying pledge to do better, with the likes of Apple, Amazon, Twitter and Facebook leading the way.

Now the Verge has put together a useful and detailed visualisation of how each of the giant tech companies compare in terms of diversity.

The simplicity of the presentation, and comparisons with the average American workforce, help to show just how dire the situation is, and how much more needs to be done.

Amazon has far and away the most female employees, comprising 37% of its workforce, while Microsoft and Intel have the lowest at 24%.

Every single tech company listed is well below the national US average of 47%.

Amazon also employs more people identifying as black or African American at 15%, while Facebook checks in at 1% and Facebook and Twitter just up at 2%.

The numbers become even worse when looking at leadership. While women make up 29% of these tech companies’ workforces on average, this number drops to 18% in leadership roles.

Facebook and Twitter have the highest amount of women in leadership roles, while Amazon’s leaders are by far least ethnically diverse.

As Apple CEO Tim Cook said when he released his company’s figures, “there is a lot more work to be done”.
