With inventions like the telephone and SMS created to facilitate communication with people who have disabilities, Horsley says that tech developers can have great impact by being inclusive.\" title=\"Enabled by design-athon\"><\/div>\n<p>An inclusive accelerator is launching in Sydney with a hackathon that aims to&nbsp;spark startup solutions that help people with a disability.<\/p>\n<p>Cerebral Palsy Alliance\u2019s new tech accelerator Remarkable will bring together over 100 tech developers, entrepreneurs, industry professionals and people with a disability to hack solutions for a more inclusive client base.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re using the lens of disability to create better design for everyone,\u201d Remarkable founder Peter Horsley tells <em>StartupSmart.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With inventions like the telephone and SMS created to facilitate communication with people who have disabilities, Horsley says that tech developers can have great impact by being inclusive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of these solutions came to the fore when the needs of people who have a disability were taken into consideration,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AhpcV_r07cc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Enabled by Designathon will run from Thursday March 31st to Saturday 2nd at the University of Sydney.<\/p>\n<p>Backed by NSW Family and Community Services and the Telstra Foundation, the two-day hackathon will see at least one person with a disability represented in each startup group.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe start with people who have disabilities &#8211; whether it\u2019s vision impairment, hearing loss, cerebral palsy,\u201d Horsley says.<\/p>\n<p>Commencing with a series of lightening talks by special guests like navy diver Paul de Gelder who lost limbs in a shark attack and bio-med entrepreneur Jordan Nguyen, groups will create&nbsp;a wide range of startup ideas before presenting them to a judging panel for a chance to go through the Remarkable accelerator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemarkable is about the social and economic inclusion of people with a disability and tech has a major part to play in that,\u201d Horsley says.<\/p>\n<p>With a human-centred design approach, the event will incorporate \u201cempathy activities\u201d to create an environment where people are working alongside each with an understanding of what life is like with a disability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about what the solution enables for us,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also need to be thinking about scalable solutions whilst designing for people with a disability.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In line with this, participants will be grouped by&nbsp;their unique attributes,&nbsp;business acumen, tech skills and life experience to build solutions for a more inclusive society.<\/p>\n<p>Enabled by Designathon began in 2012 when UK\u2019s Denise Stephens was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the age of 24.<\/p>\n<p>Experiencing rapid degeneration of her health within six months and seeing first-hand the frustration with using \u201cassisted technology\u201d that hadn\u2019t really changed in 40 years, Stephens decided to launch Enabled by Design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDesign for All is a design philosophy that targets the use of products, services and systems by as many people as possible without the need for adaptation,\u201d she said&nbsp;at the Australian launch in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>With new developments in robotics, web and data-driven solutions, Horsley says the disability sector is an impact investment space with burgeoning possibility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reality is the sector is ripe for disruption,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow StartupSmart on<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>Facebook,<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>Twitter,<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>LinkedIn<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>and<\/em><em>&nbsp;<\/em><em>Soundcloud.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An inclusive accelerator is launching in Sydney with a hackathon that aims to&nbsp;spark startup solutions that help people with a<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":60690,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[18,1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/41788"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=41788"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/41788\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/60690"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=41788"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=41788"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=41788"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
