{"id":42353,"date":"2023-10-20T15:20:35","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T15:20:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/startupsmart.test\/2023\/10\/20\/bright-future-google-launches-project-sunroof-startupsmart\/"},"modified":"2023-10-20T15:20:35","modified_gmt":"2023-10-20T15:20:35","slug":"bright-future-google-launches-project-sunroof-startupsmart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/uncategorized\/bright-future-google-launches-project-sunroof-startupsmart\/","title":{"rendered":"Bright future: Google launches Project Sunroof &#8211; StartupSmart"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"445\" height=\"352\" itemprop=\"image\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/10\/l_solar-panel-445.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"l_solar-panel-445\"><\/div>\n<p>Google has launched a new service allowing Google Maps users to determine how well solar panels will work on their house.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#p=0\">Project Sunroof<\/a> utilises the data captured through Google\u2019s high-resolution aerial mapping to determine how much sunlight will hit a roof in a year, taking into account the local weather, the roof\u2019s orientation, the amount of shade from nearby trees and buildings.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs the price of installing solar has gotten less expensive, more homeowners are turning to it as a possible option for decreasing their energy bill,\u201d the site says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to make installing solar panels easy and understandable for anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To use the service, which is currently only available in San Francisco and Boston, people put in their address and some data about the monthly electricity bill.<\/p>\n<p>Project Sunroof then tells them what the recommended solar installation size is, how much it would cost, and some nearby solar providers.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The solar provider info will be sponsored, so it\u2019s likely to make Google a bit of cash on the side too.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>It was created by Google\u2019s Boston-based engineer Carl Elkin during his 20% time, free time allotted by Google to allow employees to work on projects they\u2019re interested in outside of their normal work.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The company has already spent nearly $US2 billion on clean energy projects globally.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><i>Raising your<\/i> <a href=\"startupschool\/events\/hacking-your-first-investment-round\/\"><i>first round of capital<\/i><\/a><i>?
