Salesforce co-founder, chairman and chief executive, Marc Benioff says forget the internet of things, it\u2019s all about the internet of customers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Speaking at the Software as a Service company\u2019s Dreamforce conference in San Francisco today Benioff outlined the five technology trends he says are resulting in a new \u201cincredibly connected customer\u201d.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Benioff says these trends are creating a myriad of opportunities for businesses. \u201cIt\u2019s the ability to look and analyse and have that one-and-one relationship with our customer, that\u2019s possible in a way that has never before been possible,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The five trends identified by Benioff are:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/b><\/p>\n

1.  Cloud<\/b><\/h3>\n

Salesforce was one of the original Software as a Service businesses to utilise cloud technology but Benioff says the impact of the cloud continues to grow.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s amazing what is happening with the cloud\u201d, he says.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Salesforce is predicting a US$27O billion ($375 billion) market for cloud computing by 2020.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

2.  Mobile<\/b><\/h3>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not just a cloud revolution, it\u2019s also about a mobile revolution,\u201d Benioff says.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Salesforce predicts there will be 6 billion smartphones used globally by 2020.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIn every single one of our pockets we will have way more power than the computers that we saw in the main frame age,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

3.  Social<\/b><\/h3>\n

We are also in the midst of a \u201csocial revolution\u201d according to Benioff.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was just a couple of weeks ago that we saw Facebook talking about they have over a billion users on their application in a single day,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a whole new style of working, it\u2019s a whole new style of engagement\u201d.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Benioff predicts there will be 3 billion social media users globally by 2020.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

4.  Data science<\/b><\/h3>\n

The data science revolution is the \u201cmajor revolution in changes in predictive analytics and machine learning and artificial learning,\u201d according to Benioff.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He says businesses need to do more to harness available data, with 90% of the world\u2019s data created in the last twelve months.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

5.  Internet of Things<\/b><\/h3>\n

\u201cThe Internet of Things revolution means everything is connected in the IoT, my car is connected my camera is connected,\u201d Benioff says.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cEverything I am doing is now on the network. I\u2019m more connected to the very people supporting me in my life, the people building products and services, than ever before.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

John Thompson, chairman of Microsoft, told Dreamforce, the IoT creates more opportunities for businesses.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cAs we make this transition to an IoT based cloud, there is more and more data, so the opportunity for more and more services will become available,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Thompson says in the future you will get in your car and it will be able to tell you about your appointments for the day and the customers you will be meeting.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cThe real opportunity ahead is to change the lives of people everywhere on the planet,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWe will make the ubiquity of computers available to everyone through mobile and cloud based services.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The internet of customers<\/b><\/h3>\n

Because the IoT enables us to be more connected than ever before to the people supporting our lives, Benioff says the next revolution is the internet of customers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cWelcome to the internet of customers, because behind every one of these things, behind my BMW, or my watch\u2026 is a customer,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a world of mass customisation \u2026 but when I\u2019m using anything on the IoT of course I expect a one-on-one high fidelity relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Benioff says this is a \u201cbig shift\u201d from just a few years ago.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Salesforce\u2019s new products<\/b><\/h3>\n

Benioff unveiled three new Salesforce products at the Dreamforce conference including Salesforce IQ, Salesforce IoT Cloud, and Salesforce Lightning.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

SalesforceIQ for Small Business connects Salesforce\u2019s customer relationship management system to users emails, including Gmail and Hotmail, and calendars.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\u201cThen we apply intelligence to it,\u201d Salesforce co-founder Parker Harris says.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Salesforce IQ suggested tasks function recommends specific actions to sales reps and the closest connections function identifies the best person in a company to provide the best introduction to a target contact or company.<\/p>\n
