The ability to negotiate your own worth, build a great network around you and hire the best people will make or break you as a startup founder, Agency Iceberg founder Anna O\u2019Dea says.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Dea left a career in recruit to launch her own startup two years ago, with her talent agency now nearing $1 million in annual turnover.<\/p>\n

She says there are three core things to be considered before launching a startup.<\/p>\n

  1. \u201cDo you have a network you can reach out to from day one?<\/li>\n
  2. Can you make tough decisions, and can you make them on your own?<\/li>\n
  3. Will you take risks and are you willing to back yourself?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    If you can answer \u201cyes\u201d to these questions, there are three critical skills that founders need to develop while growing their early-stage ventures.<\/p>\n

    Building a network<\/h3>\n

    \u201cYou can\u2019t buy a network,\u201d O\u2019Dea says.<\/p>\n

    Building a network can help with another from bringing in early adopters or scoring external funding.<\/p>\n

    \u201cHow many clients do you have realistically that you can start talking to when you do start your startup,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

    \u201cYou\u2019ve got to think revenue and relationships.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Hiring the best people<\/h3>\n

    The ability to hire the best people early-on and compensate for your own gap in knowledge or skills as a founder will make or break a startup.<\/p>\n

    Veronica Munro, the newly announced CEO of impact accelerator One10<\/a>, prefers to meet potential new recruits over coffee and have a casual conversation rather than a more traditional interview in order to get an insight into their purpose.<\/p>\n

    \u201cThe biggest thing I look for in people is not their skills or their CV,\u201d Munro tells StartupSmart.<\/em><\/p>\n

    \u201cI look for what drives people \u2013 do they have initiative?\u201d<\/p>\n

    Every person an early-stage company hires needs to have a high level of initiative and be able to manage their own projects and make decisions, Munro says.<\/p>\n

    \u201cIt\u2019s about the people and not about the skills, because the skills can always be learned,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

    It\u2019s also important for founders to be flexible and open to concepts like job sharing and part-time work,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

    \u201cYou get the best staff when you\u2019re flexible,\u201d Munro says.<\/p>\n

    Negotiating your own worth<\/h3>\n

    It\u2019s important for founders to be able to fairly value themselves in order to grow a business and not give away too much equity,\u201d O\u2019Dea says.<\/p>\n

    \u201cWhen it comes to negotiation you have to back yourself and know what you\u2019re talking,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

    \u201cIt comes down to being honest and being transparent.\u201d<\/p>\n

    This can come down to how much you sell your product or service for, or how equity you\u2019re willing to give up in your startup.<\/p>\n

    Whichever it is, it\u2019s always best to be done in person, O\u2019Dea says.<\/p>\n

    \u201cMarket-rate your worth and your staff\u2019s value as well \u2013 what their time is worth,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
