But it\u2019s easily solved with a few choice words, Ghostwriter.com founder Bill Murphy Jnr. writes in <em>Inc<\/em> this week.<\/p>\n<p>Murphy has come up with a cheat sheet of open-ended questions that can be used as a scaffolding&nbsp;to make a killer first impression.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s nothing elaborate here: he starts with \u201cHello\u201d and \u201cI\u2019m happy to see you\u201d. But Murphy says&nbsp;these basic icebreakers have helped his own confidence immensely, and they\u2019re easy to internalise.<\/p>\n<p>The key is being interested in other people\u2019s challenges, recognising their strengths and staying open to their ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Picking out an element of a colleague or employees\u2019 work and starting with \u201cI\u2019m really impressed by the way you \u2026\u201d can engage someone, says Murphy, and it doesn\u2019t even have to be about your work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you know the person a bit, you might say that you\u2019re impressed by how they always have great stories about the weekend, or always eat healthy food in the office,\u201d Murphy says.<\/p>\n<p>When developing your own set of go-to icebreakers, it\u2019s all about being positive and coming up with things that will prompt&nbsp;a reaction in the other person\u2014even if you\u2019re setting limits on your own time, Murphy says.<\/p>\n<p>He ranks the phrase \u201cthanks, but I can\u2019t\u201d<em><b>&nbsp;<\/b><\/em>as one of the top sentences to gain respect from others and&nbsp;to achieve the outcome you want.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an easy catch-all.
