those just entering the startup scene, simple business etiquette can go out the window, Melbourne Accelerator Program director Rohan Workman says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Workman spends a lot of time working with startups and new entrepreneurs and says he regularly sees founders not practicing many unwritten rules when approaching and connecting in various circles.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people aren\u2019t necessarily aware of business etiquette,\u201d Workman tells <em>StartupSmart.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re looking to catch up with somebody for advice, there are a couple of things you should do to make that as easy as possible for the person that you want help from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"100%\" height=\"600\" frameborder=\"no\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>When first making contact with someone, explain in a couple of sentences who you are and what you need help with, Workman says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd when you\u2019re reaching out to them, suggest a couple of different times for them to catch up with you,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Though it may seem trivial, Workman says it\u2019s much easier for him to co-ordinate a meeting when he has been give a specifically requested time than when someone asks for random availability over the next couple of weeks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose are very specific things I can say yes or no to very quickly,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the basic fundamentals of business etiquette like arriving on time and a firm handshake, Workman says acknowledging everyone you meet, including front desk staff, is crucial.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He says he has been in meetings where younger female colleagues have been addressed poorly.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no clearer sign of disrespect,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But Workman says his experience with new founders is improving.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you come to high school, when you come to university, you don\u2019t know how the business world works,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although startups can be more laid back and relaxed than the corporate world, Workman says they\u2019re still in a professional environment.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And with the startup sector being based on a \u201cpay it forward\u201d system, Workman says these basic behavioural cues can be the make or break for your venture and reputation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one when they\u2019re starting a company ever knows or could possibly know everything that they need to know in order to make that business a success,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>To ensure you successfully initiate connections when entering the startup ecosystem and build long-term relationships, having good business etiquette will help you achieve greater impact and opportunity, he says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen people are more likely to meet with you, they\u2019re more likely to follow up with you, they\u2019re more likely to introduce you to their networks because they know that you\u2019re going to respect their network,\u201d Workman
