{"id":54480,"date":"2023-10-20T16:27:45","date_gmt":"2023-10-20T16:27:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/startupsmart.test\/2023\/10\/20\/we-can-we-must-do-better-csiro-report-highlights-innovation-inefficiency-as-roadblock-to-growth-startupsmart\/"},"modified":"2023-10-20T16:27:45","modified_gmt":"2023-10-20T16:27:45","slug":"we-can-we-must-do-better-csiro-report-highlights-innovation-inefficiency-as-roadblock-to-growth-startupsmart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.startupsmart.com.au\/uncategorized\/we-can-we-must-do-better-csiro-report-highlights-innovation-inefficiency-as-roadblock-to-growth-startupsmart\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cWe can, we must, do better\u201d: CSIRO report highlights innovation inefficiency as roadblock to growth &#8211; StartupSmart"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"443\" height=\"352\" itemprop=\"image\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/l_technologyolde_445.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"l_technologyolde_445\"\/><\/div>\n<p>A new CSIRO report has highlighted Australia\u2019s poor innovation efficiency and research-business collaboration as major roadblocks to entrepreneurial innovation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.csiro.au\/en\/News\/News-releases\/2015\/Science-masterplan-for-Australias-growth?featured=F29EDEB1728C4A92B579C7A5DC28BAD5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>Australia\u2019s Innovation Catalyst strategy for 2015-2020<\/i><\/a> is a blueprint to improve the country\u2019s innovation standards and help respond to global demands and disruptions, and outlines how the CSIRO hopes to become a global collaboration hub.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The report crowd-sourced ideas and suggestions from over 7000 research partners, collaborators, staff and members of the general public.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It notes Australia ranks last in the OECD for research-business collaboration and 81<sup>st<\/sup> in the world in terms of innovation efficiency, the return on investments in scientific research.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf that was a team sport ranking, we\u2019d be outraged,\u201d CSIRO chief executive Dr Larry Marshall says.&nbsp; \u201cAustralia\u2019s prosperity, health and sustainability is closely bound to our capacity for innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can, we must, do better. This is where profound innovation happens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sandra Mau, the founder of Brisbane-based startup <a href=\"https:\/\/trademark.vision\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trademark Vision<\/a>, which is the result of commercialising research from NICTA, isn\u2019t surprised.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor most tech startups, having both a good collaboration between tech and business is necessary, but finding good people for both sides can often be difficult,\u201d Mau says.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started out on the technology and product side, and it took our company over a year to find a good business.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Trademark Vision is a platform using image recognition to search for similar trademarked logos. It was founded in 2011 by Mau, who says it\u2019s had to develop across this time to stay innovative.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe pivoted twice using the customer discovery approach. We started off with an idea for using face recognition to help protect online reputation on social media, and then we pivoted to brand protection online and focusing on a niche in trademarks,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The report highlights the difficulties that the Australian tech startup scene is having in transitioning ideas into real businesses and products, and says more reliance needs to be placed on the customers\u2019 needs.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must put the current and future needs of our customers first, and always ask ourselves \u2013 who is the customer, what value do they need, and are we delivering?\u201d Marshall says.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24362\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" alt=\"ideainhand_445\" height=\"301\" width=\"380\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/ideainhand_445.jpg\" srcset=\"https:\/\/startupsmart-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/07\/ideainhand_445-300x238.jpg 300w, https:\/\/startupsmart-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2015\/07\/ideainhand_445.jpg 445w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mau says this difficult transition can be overcome by listening to the users, and being willing to evolve over time.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCustomer discovery is usually the first step. Most startups start off doing one thing, and through speaking with end-users, end up selling something completely different,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInteracting with many different potential user types and having the flexibility to pivot is often helpful for turning an idea into a useful product.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpend less time on development and more time on speaking with potential customers to understand the problems in that space,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The CSIRO report also identifies seven \u201cmegatrends\u201d which will guide the science, technology and innovation we do, including \u2018more from less\u2019, planetary pushback and digital immersion.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Industry and Science Ian Macfarlane says how we react to these issues will be a defining moment for the nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow well Australia industry and researchers rise to the challenge of lifting collaboration rates and boosting commercialisation of Australian ideas and products will determine the role we play in the constantly evolving global economy,\u201d Macfarlane says in the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><i>Raising your <\/i><a href=\"startupschool\/events\/hacking-your-first-investment-round\/\"><i>first round of capital<\/i><\/a><i>?
