Parting is such tweet sorrow: Twitter’s new CEO Jack Dorsey to slash headcount – StartupSmart

New Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey is wasting no time in making his mark on the social network, with large layoffs expected this week and a halt in plans to expand the company’s headquarters in San Francisco.

Re/Code reports multiple sources saying the measures will begin to roll out early this week as Dorsey looks to cut costs and make Twitter a leaner operation.

The cuts are expected to impact just about every aspect of the Twitter team, which now includes well over 4000 people in 35 offices around the world.

This is more than double the employees Twitter had in 2013, and many have argued the startup is now bloated and inefficient.

The company’s spending has also increased dramatically, up 37% year-on-year last quarter to $US633 million.

A planned 100,000-square-foot expansion of Twitter’s main office in San Francisco has also been canned.

Dorsey was appointed permanent CEO last week after serving as interim head honcho since July and may have signalled his plans to cut costs early on.

“My focus is to build teams that move fast, and learn faster,” Dorsey said on Twitter.

“We’re working hard at Twitter to focus our roadmap on a few things we can make really great.”
